Video Gaming for Fun and Fitness
A guide for active seniors
Not all gaming means sitting still. A whole category of games — often called “exergames” — is built specifically around movement, and there’s real research behind the physical benefits.
What the Research Shows
A 2014 systematic review in the Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation examined 13 studies on VR and motion-based exercise games for older adults, and found real improvements in mobility, lower-limb muscular strength, balance control, reaction time, and — importantly — a reduction in falls.
Games Worth Trying
- Nintendo Switch Sports — motion-controlled bowling, tennis, volleyball and more; genuinely gets you standing and moving, and works well in short sessions
- Ring Fit Adventure (Switch/Switch 2) — a structured, adjustable-intensity fitness game built around a resistance ring accessory
- Just Dance (most platforms) — simple, fun, and scalable to whatever pace feels comfortable
- Supernatural (Meta Quest VR) — a VR fitness app combining music and movement, in the same territory as the VR balance research we’ve covered elsewhere
A Sensible Starting Point
- Start with short sessions — 10-15 minutes is a completely legitimate place to begin
- Most of these games let you play seated if standing for long periods isn’t comfortable
- As with any new physical activity, it’s worth a quick word with your doctor first if you have balance concerns or a relevant health condition
